Stand Firm in the Faith

One of the oddities of my career in the blogosphere is that, even though I'm a hard-boiled Protestant, my writings on cultural issues have earned me legions of Catholic admirers . . . . My ancestors were Ulster Scots and Covenanters, and respect for the sacrifices they made to defend their independent faith requires me to stand firm in defiance like the Martyr of the Solway. Yet in our secularized society, when so many have been "conformed to this world," I also stand firm with those of any faith who defy the Contraceptive Culture.

  1. Count me as one of your Catholic (convert) admirers. And, believe it or not, it wasn't the Speedo shot that first got my attention. Though it may have helped to retain it....

  2. As a staunch Catholic (I always root - rather despairingly, I admit - for the Spanish Armada in those old Errol Flynn movies), I commend your stance on the contraceptive culture.

  3. Umnnnhhh....

"Liberation theology" emanated from a common mis-apprehension--that Gummint can 'make it all better.'

There is no Church document which supports that aphorism, period.

As to economics: even Acton Institute liked JPII's document(s) on economics, albeit they'd tweak them a bit, as would Mike Novak.

There is licit research which tells one that Catholicism was, more or less, the father of capitalism with the Church's insistence on individual rights.

At the same time, the Church's defense of individual rights was correctly utilized in the formation of unions.

Keep your eyes on the dignity of each individual before God and you'll "get" all of the Church's social teachings.

  4. Another Catholic fan standing up to be counted here. The contraceptive culture is how the world is killing itself.

  5. TMI alert: I sometimes wonder if all those years on the pill killed my chances of ever having any children. Either that or the time a bunch of us little girls were sitting around talking abut marriage and children and I was the only one who said I'd never have kids soley out of the desire to have answer opposite of everyone else. It truly disturbed me that all these girls wanted to do was get married and have lots of kids. Now that I have an awesome guy in my life who would make the best Dad ever, I think I may have blown it with The Man Upstairs.
Then again, maybe I'm just destined to be "Aunt Red".

More and more people are leafing Catholicism.

A large number of people have left the Catholic Church. Approximately one-third of the survey respondents who say they were raised Catholic no longer describe themselves as Catholic. This means that roughly 10% of all Americans are former Catholics.

    RELIGION IS FOR OLD PEOPLE:

Young adults ages 18-29 are much more likely than those age 70 and older to say that they are not affiliated with any particular religion (25% vs. 8%).
