Poll: NJ Gov. Corzine Losing

And it's a Daily Kos poll, of all things:

Chris Christie (R) 46%
Jon Corzine (D) 39%
Undecided 15%

Steve Lonegan (R) 43%
Jon Corzine (D) 40%
Undecided 17%

(Research 2000 via Taegan Goddard.) Corzine is in a world of hurt. Any time the incumbent is below 50%, that's trouble. If the challenger ever gets over 50%, the incumbent can kiss it good-bye.

This might be the first step in a GOP comeback. I keep telling these idiot "big picture" pundits that there is no such thing as a political "trend" apart from individual elections, individual candidates, and individual policies. Or to quote the Gipper:
"I do not believe in a fate that will fall on us no matter what we do. I believe in a fate that will fall on us if we do nothing."
If any of the readers live in the Jersey area and can fill me in on what specific issues are hurting Corzine, please put the links in the comments. I'd also like to know more about the two Republican candidates. The latest Rasmussen poll shows Christie beating Longegan in the primary next week, but only by about 11 points, and there are still a lot of undecided voters.

  1. I live in NJ and I was amazed at how annoyed so many became when JC said we needed to suspend property tax rebates for a time(not for the elderly or disabled though); he's right about that actually. We are so running out of money in Jersey in so many ways. I didn't vote for him, but there have been quite a few times I felt his heart(& head) was in the right place. Not always for sure....

Tax receipts are down over a billion off projections for the year, & a whole lot of things having to do with that, or with what he says must be done because of that, have pissed many off as well. One problem, which crosses all party lines & states, is many angry people seem to know snippets of high profile stories which they then base their like/dislike upon. There are many other NJ issues(as in all states), but basically(I'm greatly simplifying) we spent too much, fam. story, but no one wants to pay the piper.

I'm still not certain how I will be voting. ~Mary

  2. New Jersey resident here. Basically Corzine is toast for exactly the same things Obama is doing (too much tax and spend). Rather than make serious cuts, he wants to suspend property tax rebates and he raised the parkway tolls (that was the kiss of death).

On the Republican side, Chris Christie is the moderate from the same mold as Whitman and Lonegan is the real conservative.

I will be voting for Lonegan and should he lose to Christie, I will write in his name in the general election. I am too through with RINOs.

  3. It's definitely the suspending the property tax rebates for those that make over $75,000. In NJ, that is middle class, not rich at all. As you probably know, we have one of the highest property taxes in the country. Despite this, Corzine is expanding the education budget:

"There are certain parts of our government's work that we must sustain. In New Jersey, we recognize the importance of our children, they are our bright hope for the future. To that purpose, in this budget, we have increased, rather than cut, classroom funding for K-12 education. And with the federal government's help, we're giving our children a jump-start on a lifetime of learning."

I'm not sure who I will be voting for in the primary but I'm leaning towards Lonegan. From what I hear, Christie is a "moderate" Republican. We have nothing left to lose, might as well go for the longer shot conservative.
