FBI surveilling David Kernell?

A bit of mystery:
  • FBI Memphis office says it has been contacted by the FBI Anchorage office in regard to the Palin e-mail hacking investigation.
  • As of 3:37 P.M., according to Tennessee blogger Sharon Cobb -- a friend of state Rep. Mike Kernell --neither he nor his son David had been contacted by law enforcement.
Hmmm. OK, so what is the FBI up to? What was the request from Anchorage? What is SOP for the FBI?

An educated guess: Establish the location of the person of interest, begin surveillance, make sure that he doesn't go to the airport and board a plane for Rio de Janeiro. Also, watch to see if he drives to a dumpster and ditches any computer-sized packages.

The computer forensics folks at FBI HQ are the lead investigators in this case. The conclusive evidence is stored in online databases, not in Knoxville or Memphis. Until HQ has found the basis of a search warrant or an arrest, there's not really any reason for FBI agents to question the Kernells.

If I were David Kernell, however, I don't think I'd be discussing this situation on the telephone, if you get my drift. And I'd keep my eyes peeled for late-model sedans driven by vaguely official-looking people.

UPDATE 9/21: FBI serves search warrant?

  1. Sharon Cobb has an update that says she just spoke with Mike Kernell and he was heading to dinner with David and David's lawyer. I think we will have a statement soon.

Kernell has a long history in TN politics and this is an explosive allegation. If David did it, they have to come clean before the Feds expose it. I'd expect a statement admitting David's involvement, calling it a prank, mentioning troubles from his youth and asking for mercy. I expect they will get from Gov Palin.

  2. Your educated guess sounds right.

Speaking of hacking, has RedState* been hacked? The logo field at the top of the page sure looks like it, unless they've decided to go with a pirate theme.

*I was banned from that neocon hellhole for having the audacity to support the only small government conservative running in the R primary -- Ron Paul -- and who is still the only candidate on either side of the aisle who has a f'n clue about the economy, and who I wish your Crazy Cousin John would announce as his Sec. of the Treasury, like yesterday.

Disclaimer: I am not part of the legions of Paultards! I am a rational supporter (well, at least I like to think so).

  3. according to the latest from Sharon Cobb (who is not a happy camper because of some blog comments aimed at her...) Mike Kernell is in Knoxville with his son David, and they are lawyered up. Not the actions of an innocent person who has not even been contacted by authorities.

If David had nothing to do with it, a simple "he had nothing to do with it" would have ended the matter.

I'd love to know exactly who the lawyer is.

  4. What's going on? How about they are waiting until everything is all cleaned up before the call for an appointment.

If you are a Republican is when they send in the battalion to breakdown the doors, shoot the dogs and cuff everbody to the dead bodies.

  5. In regards to RedState, see this. I was sent to Siberia 2.5 years ago, and the only pretext they were ever able to come up with was due to them Clintonianally misconstruing a quote from someone else.

  6. I'd like to know the name of the lawyer AND who is paying for them.
