Rasmussen: McCain 48%, Obama 47%

The race tightens in the latest daily tracking poll, while Scott Rasmussen comments that Democrats have historically had trouble gaining a majority of the popular vote -- Jimmy Carter was the last Democrat to win an outright majority, and that was in 1976. (Bill Clinton was elected with 43% in 1992 and re-elected in 1996 with 49%.)

In state polling, the best news for Republicans is in Ohio, where the six most recent polls show McCain ahead. Rasmussen shows McCain up by 5 points in Florida, and tied with Obama in Pennsylvania.
