Unchecked population growth is speeding climate change, damaging life-nurturing ecosystems and dooming many countries to poverty, experts concluded in a conference report released Monday.
Unless birth rates are lowered sharply through voluntary family-planning programmes and easy access to contraceptives, the tally of humans on Earth could swell to an unsustainable 11 billion by 2050, they warned. . . .
"Continued rapid population growth in many of the least developed countries could lead to hunger, a failure of education and conflict," said Malcolm Potts at the University of California in Berkeley, which hosted the conference in February.
The papers, authored by 42 specialists in environmental science, economics and demography, are published by the Royal Society, Britain's de-facto academy of sciences.
"There is no doubt that the current rate of human population growth is unsustainable," summarised Roger Short, a professor at the University of Melbourne in Australia.
"The inexorable increase in human numbers is exhausting conventional energy supplies, accelerating environmental pollution and global warming and providing an increasing number of failed states where civil unrest prevails."
Don't argue -- they're experts and you're not. So just turn down the lights, put on some soft music and tell your sweetheart, "Hey, you want to contribute to environmental destruction, energy depletion and civil unrest?"
Father of six -- trying to my part!
Don't these pagans know that the population growth will be self correcting? Hey, if the planet can't sustain the population then people will die, which is great news for them.
ReplyDeleteOr maybe they'll decide that wars aren't so bad after all, since they weed out the population.

Okay, the less the left breeds the better.
ReplyDeleteIt's Paul Ehrlich all over again. I wish Julian Simon were still around to take these "experts" down a notch.
ReplyDeleteI've blogged repeatedly about this sort of stupidity:

There is nothing stopping these experts from killing themselves right?
ReplyDeleteIf too much population is such a problem, and it is so bad for the planet, why don't those people do the unselfish thing a voluntarily leave---like in Logan's Run. (I hope I didn't date myself too much with that)
ReplyDeleteThe future belongs to those who show up.
ReplyDeleteThere is nothing stopping these experts from killing themselves right?
ReplyDeleteThe problem is, "themselves" is not who they want to start with...
No. It's not themselves. It just happens to be the citizens of third-world or developing nations they want to off - brown, black and yellow-skinned people whose children we can abort and whose bodies we can pollute with chemical contraceptives.
ReplyDeleteEnvironmentalists never off themselves or their families to set an example. Just like Peter Singer is all for the murder of disabled infants and children but hasn't killed off his Alzheimer's afflicted mother yet. The hypocrisy is stunning. (And, no, I don't want environmentalists to kill themselves or their kids...nor do I want Singer to euthanize his ailing mother. But I DO have a problem with them killing other people to save the planet.)
Notice how they never say abstinence as a solution. It seems as if they're eager for a body count - see how many can be aborted or contracepted out of existence rather than making SURE people aren't going to create new life. And note how they ignore the real environmental impact of the hormones in birth control pills (and condoms can't be great for Gaia, either).
If too much population is bad, why are people everywhere getting all alarmed about the swine flu? If it's going to be a pandemic with numerous fatalities, then why not let it run its course and rid us of this "surplus population"?
Borlaug proved science and progress can provide answers and solutions to our challenges. Why don't libs and greens believe in that?
ReplyDeleteYou know, about 5-6 months ago, there was a bigshot conference attended by Bill Gates, Soros, Oprah, Buffett and a few others. The met to discuss the world's problems and decided collectively that population control was the number one priority.
I do not want anyone killing anyone off. But, controlled conception is at least a step towards a sustainable environment. Yes, like one of you said, the world population will sustain itself, because people won't be able to survive in the harsh conditions we are creating for ourselves, but do you really want to have to go through all that suffering when we can simply take birth control pills? Or wear condoms? Or abstain altogether? Of course, NOBODY can do that! They'd rather have the earth kill thousands of people in an ice age, except guess what? You'll probably die in it.
