Does Jeff Goldstein hate Bristol Palin?

All is fair in love, war and comedy, He of the Massive Triceps seems to be saying:
Okay then. I justify it this way:
This is what comedians do -- particularly those who are charged with topical humor on a nightly basis. . . .
For good or ill, Bristol Palin’s pregnancy long ago became a public event, and it is part and parcel of the “Sarah Palin” construct Letterman was taking aim at.
What is interesting to me is that, ordinarily, teenage pregnancy — and tacit acceptance of same — is tied to the left. Which is to say, the left generally doesn’t snipe at teen pregnancy as a problematic moral condition.
Trust me, Jeff, I've been burned on this flame a time or two. At this point, it's reasonably safe hatin' on Levi Johnston, but ixnay on the Istolbray. (BTW, I came this close to trying some ironically nuanced OUTLAW humor here, but decided discretion was the better part of valor.)

  1. Bristol's pregnancy only became a 'public event' because her mom was picked to run as VP for Old Man McCain. That doesn't mean she is 'fair game' on the comedy circuit. Incidentally I didn't realize David Letterman was still considered a comedian. The Left is being their usual two-faced self. Sniping at Bristol's pregnancy while keeping mum regarding the rest of teen pregnancy at large. All Palin has to do is exist and the Left goes out of its way to throw poop at her and her family. She must be doing something right.

  2. Goldstein is right. It's perfectly acceptable for people to snipe at Palin's children. Because the ones doing it are liberals. And it's perfectly acceptable for leftists to do that sort of thing.

If, however, a Republican, (or worse yet, a Conservative Republican) had said any such thing, it would immediately have caused half of the Right blogosphere to descend on them in a fury of rage and a flurry of denouncements. Frum, Parker, and Charles Johnson would immediately excommunicate them.

That's because if a Republican says anything that might upset a "moderate" he is being divisive. Leftists, however, seem to attract moderates by being as vicious as possible.

It's a perfectly justifiable comment based on who made the comment, don't you see? You just have to look at the bigger picture in order to understand.

  3. What Bristol Palin did in accepting the pregnancy and taking the pregnancy to term, and to raise that baby to the best of her ability, with or without the young Mr. Johnston, was the gutty hard thing to do. There was nothing comedic about it, accept to the basest among us. If Mr. Letterman finds humor in children born out of wedlock, he has nbo farther to look than his own son. I suppose Govenor Palin could respond with something to the like of "So Harry was born a bastard ... well, a chip off the old block!" But she's far to fine a person to attempt fun at the expense of another person's children.

  4. Stacy, I'll try to make it easy for you: if you want to either use the words "slut" or "whore," or imply them, then you might want to keep it to yourself, or you're going to piss people off.

And they won't want to hear that it's just . . . raining.
