How not to deal with a gang-rape

Let's start with some basics: When a girl is gang-raped for two hours at the high-school homecoming dance, the generic "community" is not the victim and generic "violence" is not the perpetrator. But leave it to the Left Coast to respond to this heinous crime in politically correct fashion:

Upward of 200 people marched from Richmond High School to nearby Wendell Park, where speakers decried violence against women and what they see as the social forces that take such behavior in stride.
"Men need to speak to other men and say, 'Stop,' " said Richard Wright, a community activist from Oakland. "Men need to stand up in this to make a cultural change, to say that rape is no longer acceptable."

Uh . . . to whom was rape ever "acceptable," Mr. Wright? But wait, there's more:

Richmond Mayor Gayle McLaughlin . . . thanked people for bringing an affirmative message of support into her community.
"It's great to hear you raising your voices loud and clear against this horrible crime, and against the horrible crimes against women that go on all the time," McLaughlin said. "This is not about Richmond youth. This is a much larger systemic problem."

Way to muddle the issue, Mayor! Could you please elaborate on that "larger systemic problem"? Because I'm thinking the real problem is the criminals who committed this act. And I'm also thinking that every attempt to externalize guilt by attributing this rape to amorphous "social forces" tends toward the exculpation of the rapists.

There's not really much that rallies and speeches can accomplish in terms of preventing rape. A more simple and useful response: Prosecute the guilty to the maximum extent of the law and, if you have a daughter, don't ever let her go near a California public school.

Update on the California homecoming gang rape: 'It's not safe there at all'

ABC News reports four suspects arrested and this:

One student, 16-year-old Jennie Steinberg, told the Associated Press that her mother has let her transfer from the school Tuesday.
"It's not safe there at all," she said. "I'm not going back."

Of course it's not safe. It's a California public school. Details of the suspects and the crime:

Manuel Ortega, a 19-year-old former Richmond High School student, has been charged with robbery, assault with a deadly weapon causing great bodily injury, rape in concert [gang rape] and rape with violence, according to Richmond Police Lt. Mark Gagan.
The Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office is going to ask for a life sentence for Ortega, Gagan said. His bail has been set at $1,230,000
The other three suspects are juveniles, ages 15, 16 and 17, but are to be charged as adults, and the D.A.'s office will seek life sentences for the trio, Gagan said.
The three juveniles are being held without bail on charges of rape in concert and penetration with an foreign object in concert. In addition, the 16-year-old will be charged with robbery.
A fifth suspect, 21-year-old Salvador Rodriguez, arrested Tuesday night, has not yet been charged, although the district attorney's office continues to investigate his role. . . .
Police now believe that as many as 10 suspects took part in the gang rape, while 20 others stood by and watched the crime occur in a dimly lit corner of the sprawling campus, according to KGO. . . .
"These suspects are monsters. And, I don't understand how this many people capable of such atrocious behavior could be in one place at one time," Gagan told KGO.

To repeat: It's a California public school. If you live in California, don't send your kids into that mess.

A California high school student who police said was gang raped in a two-and-a-half-hour assault outside a homecoming dance remained hospitalized in stable condition Monday . . .
Nineteen-year-old Manuel Ortega, described as a former student at the school, was arrested soon after he fled the scene and will face charges of rape, robbery and kidnapping, police said.
A 15-year-old was later arrested and charged with one count of felony sexual assault. A third teenager was being interviewed, according to Lt. Mark Gagan of the police department in Richmond, California.
"Based on witness statements and suspect statements, and also physical evidence, we know that she was raped by at least four suspects committing multiple sex acts," Gagan said.
Investigators said as many as 15 people, all males, stood around watching the assault, but did not call police or help the victim, a 15-year-old student at Richmond High School in suburban San Francisco. . . .

Another argument for home-schooling, just in case there is any semi-intelligent parent (i.e., with the minimal IQ necessary to read a blog) who is still sending their children into the organized barbarism of America's dysfunctional government education system.

How did I miss this bizarre story last week?

The keen eyes of some Southern Illinois educators prevent an adult from walking the halls of a Heartland high school. Marion Police say a 24-year-old woman posed as a 15-year-old boy and attempted to enroll at Marion High School. . . .
[Superintendent Wade] Hudgens says the student claimed to be a 15-year-old boy by the name Jack Stones, whom just arrived from St. Louis and was now living in Marion with an adult male.
"They claimed that this person was homeless and they were attempting to gain guardianship through the court system," Hudgens added.
School staff referred the 15-year-old to the Marion High School Extension Center. Hudgens says Stones took a placement test at the center on Monday.
"Gaining that time, by saying that we needed to do the placement testing allowed our staff to do additional research and contact the FBI," Hudgens said.
Hudgens says they found a Facebook picture of Stones. . . .
"We've been told jack is a 24-year-old female," Hudgens said.
Marion Police says Jack's legal last name is Kaiser and she is from California. Police arrested Kaiser Tuesday and charged her with disorderly conduct for misrepresentation to state agencies.

OK, necessary clarification for those readers who are experiencing acute Whiskey Tango Foxtrot Syndrome, from the Associated Press:

Police in the southern Illinois city of Marion say they've arrested a 24-year-old woman who tried to enroll in the local high school as a 15-year-old boy.
Investigators say Jack Kaiser is a transgender person who also has gone by the name Jennifer May. Kaiser was arrested Tuesday and charged with disorderly conduct for misrepresenting herself to a state agency.

Riiiiight. Female-to-male transsexual gets pumped up on testosterone treatments, engages in reckless male behavior, decides to experience the boyhood she never had, enrolls in high school, goes out for football team . . .

Oscar-bait, baby. The producers say Angelina Jolie's dying for the "Jack Stones" part, but Natalie Portman has seen the script, too. Of course, Ashton Kutcher as the high school quarterback whose girlfriend (Reese Witherspoon) dumps him for the new kid on the team. Madcap hijinks ensue!

Roman Polanski to direct, with Woody Allen as the quirky social studies teacher wrongly accused of being gay because of his misunderstood (and purely platonic) attraction to the girlish "Jack":

MR. MELLISH: Are you part Korean?
JENNIFER/JACK: No, why?
MR. MELLISH: Nothing, really. You just remind me of someone. Never mind. So, you're Jewish?
JENNIFER/JACK: What? No. I mean, not that there's anything wrong with being Jewish but . . . why would you ask somebody something like that?
MR. MELLISH: Oh, nothing. It's just that you look like you could have a little Jewish in you.
JENNIFER/JACK: Well, I don't.
MR. MELLISH: Not yet, anyway.

Of course, it would be wrong to make fun of the tragic plight of poor Jennifer/Jack, a victim who is struggling with serious identity issues in a cruel and homophobic society.

Wrong, I say, to laugh at Jennifer/Jack's misguided attempt to find acceptance and tolerance in the benighted and atavistic heartland community of Marion, Illinois.

But just wait until you see the soon-to-be-infamous "Zucchini Scene" in this new movie! Not since American Pie has gross-out humor been so genuinely gross . . .

Flee to Europe, pay off the victim:

Roman Polanski agreed to pay his victim of sexual assault $500,000, 15 years after he fled the US, according to court documents released to the media.
The French-Polish director is being held in Switzerland on a US arrest warrant over his 1977 conviction for unlawful sex with a 13-year-old girl.
The confidential deal between Mr Polanski and the victim, Samantha Geimer, was reached in October 1993.
It was disclosed because of a two-year struggle to get the film-maker to pay. . . .
The last court filing in August 1996 stated that he owed Ms Geimer $604,416.22, including interest.

What was it that F. Scott Fitzgerald said? The rich are different than you and me. They have more money, so when they feed a 13-year-old Quaaludes and rape her anus, they can skip out to Europe, offer their victim a fat settlement and spend the next 30 years collecting "Lifetime Achievement" awards.

Everybody in Hollywood thinks that's just cool. What Hollywood condemns is the ignorance and intolerance of yokels who don't agree that Polanski's artistic genius should grant him license to rape.

A New Jersey judge has dismissed animal cruelty charges against a cop accused of committing a sex act with young cows, saying a grand jury had no way of knowing whether the animals were "tormented."
Moorestown police officer Robert Melia, who is currently suspended, allegedly engaged in oral sex acts with five calves in Southampton in 2006.
Since New Jersey currently has no law explicitly banning such an act, prosecutors in Burlington county brought animal cruelty charges against Melia, the Philadelphia Daily News reports.
Judge Morely said it was questionable that Melia's acts, though "disgusting," constituted animal cruelty.
"I'm not saying it's OK," Morely said. "This is a legal question for me. It's not a questions of morals. It's not a question of hygiene. It's not a question of how people should conduct themselves."

But wait! Like a Billy Mays TV informercial, there's more:

The judge's dismissal does not mark the end of Melia's legal woes.
He, along with girlfriend Heather Lewis, was arrested in April 2008 for sexually assaulting three girls over a five-year-period.
Authorities investigating those charges reportedly uncovered videos on his computer of a girl being "subjected to sexual activity" in addition to taped encounters between Melia and the calves.

Sex with kids. Sex with cows. Kiddie porn. Cow porn. Like they say in Delaware, what happens in New Jersey, stays in New Jersey -- and thank God for that. But you're probably asking yourself, "What manner of loathsome creatures could possibly engage in this kind of twisted, decadent evil?"

Aurelio Vallerillo-Sanchezis so totally going to Hell

OMAHA, Neb. — A Nebraska man who stole a painting of the Virgin Mary to finance an abortion for a teen he raped has been convicted of first-degree sexual assault and felony theft.
Aurelio Vallerillo-Sanchez, 39, of Omaha pleaded no contest to the charges Friday . . .
Beadle said Vallerillo-Sanchez fled to Mexico with the 300-year-old painting worth $100,000 and the pregnant teen in March 2007.
"The plan was that when they got to Mexico, she was to undergo an abortion," she said.
When an abortion wasn't possible, Vallerillo-Sanchez pushed to have the baby given up for adoption, Beadle said: "He wanted to do everything he could to get rid of this baby 'cause it was evidence against him."
The teen returned to Nebraska after giving birth, the prosecutor said.
Vallerillo-Sanchez was arrested in February after DNA linked him to the September 2006 assault of the then-14-year-old girl.

Consensual teen sex-texting

First gay marriage, now this:

The Vermont Legislature is considering a bill that would legalize so-called "sexting" between teenagers.
Sexting refers to the exchange of explicit photos and videos via mobile phone. Under current laws, participants can be charged with child pornography, but lawmakers are considering a bill to legalize the consensual exchange of graphic images between two people 13 to 18 years old. Passing along such images to others would remain a crime.
Supporters told The Burlington Free Press they don't want to condone the behavior but they don't think teenagers should be prosecuted as sex offenders for consensual conduct.

A Kentucky man is accused of persuading an 11-year-old Humble (Ky.) girl to send him nude photos of herself while the pair played video games online.
Anthony Scott O'Shea, 24, of Somerset, Ky., has been charged with promotion of child pornography, online solicitation of a minor and sexual performance of a child. He will soon be transferred to Houston, said Sgt. Gary Spurger of the Harris County Precinct 4 Constable's Office. The girl sent the man photos over the course of several weeks as they played games online with their PlayStation 3 consoles in December, Spurger said.

Maybe the New York Times' new porn expert needs to research this angle.

The news tip was sent to me by Frequent Commenter Smitty, just after I saw a Twitter from John Hawkins seeking evidence that "insanity is the new normal." I told Hawkins to remember to quote Hunter S. Thompson: "When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro." And then I noticed that Smitty had reminded me of a Saturday post, "Mamas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Downloads," which referenced Hawkins' post on an 18-year-old girl who committed suicide after her ex-boyfriend made public the nude photos she had sent him.

So this is obviously the evidence Hawkins was looking for.

KELLER — A Keller man has been jailed on child pornography charges.
Federal agents say they found illegal material at Bryan Dickson's home on Wednesday. The convicted sex offender told agents he had been viewing it online since 2006.
In 1988, Dickson was convicted in New Jersey of sexual assault of a child. But his name did not appear on any list of registered sex offenders.
Ever since he moved into his Keller home a year ago, neighbors say they had their suspicions about him. "We just kind of stayed away," said one.
Their fears were confirmed on Wednesday when federal agents arrested the 46-year-old for child pornography. . . .
But what really angers parents is the 1988 child sex assault conviction in New Jersey. Yet the Keller man was not listed in the New Jersey or Texas sex offender registries.
That infuriates neighbors who had tried checking up on him. "When you talked to him, you got bad vibes," one neighbor said. "We thought maybe it wouldn't hurt to check; didn't find anything; just thought we were being overly paranoid."
In Texas, sex offenders who served their time before 1997 aren't required to register, which may explain why Dickson lived next to a high school and was able to get jobs at family-friendly places like the Dallas Zoo and Great Wolf Lodge in Grapevine.

'Mamas, Don't Let Your Daughters Grow Up to Be Downloads'

Some very helpful advice for mothers and daughters from John Hawkins, telling the "sad, sad story" of Jesse Logan, who committed suicide at 18, after her high-school (ex-)boyfriend humiliated her by making public the nude photos of herself she had sent him.

Keep in mind that Hawkins is no prude. Every day, his Conservative Grapevine aggregrator features not only a selection of political news and commentary, but also a couple of links to cheesecake photos of lovely starlets in bikinis. This was the subject of a debate among conservative bloggers in which I framed the question, "Is Babe-Blogging a Sin?"

My conclusion was that it is not, and the joys of babe-blogging were enshrined as the popular Rule 5 of "How to Get a Million Hits on Your Blog." However, if you disagree, please don't click over to John's site. (BTW, John, you've got a broken link on the Denise Richards bikini pics at CelebSlam.) Having been an artist since youth, my aesthetic enjoyment of beauty has at times been a snare and a stumbling block to me.

There is a line between flirty and trashy, between alluring and indecent. At times, I'm not very good at figuring out where that line is, but am deeply thankful that digital media didn't exist in 1978, when I was 18 and -- believe it or not -- even less responsible than I am now.

Another homeless man, another dead victim:

VANCOUVER -- The Clark County Sheriff's Office arrested a man Monday evening in connection with the stabbing death of a teenage girl.
Detectives arrested Darrin Eugene Sanford, 30, about 6:30 p.m. on suspicion he killed Alycia Nipp, 13, on her way home from Wal-Mart, said Sgt. Scott Schanaker, a Clark County sheriff's spokesman.
Sanford is a registered sex offender convicted of approaching children in 1997 between the ages of 8 and 11 outside Harney Elementary in Vancouver and offering them money to come to his house for sex, according to public records. Sheriff's deputies said he is a transient and has been seen at an abandoned house near where Nipp was slain. (Emphasis added.)

A transient sex offender accused of stabbing a 13-year-old girl to death told detectives he killed the teen after trying to sexually assault her, according to court documents released Tuesday.
Darrin Eugene Sanford, 30, faces an aggravated murder charge in the death of 13-year-old Alycia D. Nipp, a Thomas Jefferson Middle School student.
The girl was walking home with a friend Saturday when she decided to take a shortcut through an overgrown field alone and disappeared.
Her mother called 911 late that night, and her stepfather found her body in a wooded area of the field soon after.
Nipp had been stabbed multiple times and police believe her body was dragged to a wooded area and left there.

It's more common than you think. As I exclusively reported in 2003, the homeless population -- celebrated as "victims" by liberals -- contains a disproportionate number of drug addicts, alcoholics, dangerous psychotics and violent criminals. What happened to Alycia Nipp has happened to many others. It's time we wake up to who the real victims are.

UPDATE: Alycia's school sent home a letter saying they were bringing in grief counselors. Hey, while you're at it, how about teaching kids that the "homeless" aren't harmless old rummies like the lovable vagabonds they see on TV, but are actually in many cases antisocial menaces? And how about some parents in Vancouver march on city hall to demand that police stop letting these dangerous criminals roam the streets at will?

Murderer, sexual predator, "victim of society"?

By age 15, he was living on his own. He began drinking. He dropped out of high school.
His early adulthood was characterized by a "sporadic employment history, transient lifestyle and accommodation patterns, substance abuse issues and failed short-term intimate relationships," state the documents.
His first conviction resulted from a 1982 Edmonton break-in. During the next 16 years, he amassed more than two dozen other convictions across Canada . . .

And that was before the indecent exposure charge involving a nun . . . and it gets worse. Via notorious hobophobe, Kathy Shaidle.

No one is safe from the "homeless" criminals:

Indianapolis - Police arrested a man wanted in connection with a robbery and attempted rape of a 17-year-old on January 4th. . . .
Police got a break when officers arrested [41-year-old hobo Louis] McCoin on a shoplifting charge. At that point they realized McCoin was wanted on the other charges.
McCoin faces charges of Criminal Deviate Conduct, A Felony, and Criminal Confinement, B Felony with a $100,000 bond. He was arrested on those charges and transported to the Arrestee Processing Center.

It's more common than you think.

BERKELEY, CA -- A homeless man who recently was released from state prison has been arrested on suspicion of peeping, prowling, burglary, sexual battery and a parole violation in connection with a prowling incident in Berkeley last Thursday night, police spokesman Andrew Frankel said today.
Frankel said 46-year-old James Beldin, who was released from state prison early this month, allegedly peered into a residence in the 2000 block of Parker Street on Thursday night.
Frankel said one of the alleged victims discovered a prowler who was using a ladder to peep into his girlfriend's second floor apartment window.

Ever since the 1980s, when liberals seized on "homelessness" as a tactic to portray the Reagan administration as the second coming of Herbert Hoover, the media have been trying to brainwash Americans to believe that every bum and wino is an innocent victim of circumstance. It's not true.

Many of those we call "homeless" are psychotics who have been set loose on the streets by the Carter-era policy of "deinstitutionalizing" the mentally ill. Others are recently-paroled criminals who are so anti-social -- drug-addicted, violent or just plain obnoxious -- that their own families won't have anything to do with them.

Liberals who yammer on about the "root causes" of the problem completely miss the point that, whatever the cause of the problem in the past tense, the present-tense reality is that you've got crazies, dopeheads and felons wandering the streets, protected by the cloak of victimhood that liberals have draped around them. And when you call to their attention this reality -- hobo sex offenders who threaten the safety of innocent citizens -- you're accused of "blaming the victim," as if the dopehead criminal bum were more of a victim than his actual victims.

Homelessness is not a "poverty" problem. Poverty alone does not cause homelessness. If you want to understand why this is so, you should read Adam Shephard's excellent new book, Scratch Beginnings: Me, $25, and the Search for the American Dream. Seeking to refute Barbara Ehrenreich's thesis in Nickel and Dimed -- that the poor were structurally prevented from escaping poverty by the inherent unfairness of capitalism -- Shephard set out with $25 in his pocket, relocated to a town he'd never been to, moved into a homeless shelter, and took work as a day laborer. Within a matter of months, by hard work and thrift, he had saved up enough money to rent his own apartment, buy a used truck, and had thousands of dollars in the bank.

You should read that book, and also read Thomas Sowell's The Vision of the Anointed Self-Congratulation as a Basis for Social Policy, which explains exactly what's wrong with the liberal mentality that conceives of drug-addicted sociopathic criminals as homeless "victims."

How dare you deny her her rights?

A Queens teacher fired for bedding a 17-year-old male model is suing to win her job back, saying she had no idea her lover boy was enrolled in high school during their affair.
Gina Salamino, 37, contends her job as a tenured second-grade teacher at Public School 121 should have been spared because Joshua Walter was so busy catwalking he never attended a single class during the 2006-07 school year.
"They have no case," Salamino angrily told the Daily News. "There is no improper relationship."
Salamino maintains in Manhattan Supreme Court documents that it's "complete fiction" and "ludicrous" for the Department of Education to insist the globetrotting runway star was a "student" when he hooked up with the teacher, who was then 34.

Exactly how is Ms. Salamino different from those idiots who end up caught on camera with Chris Hansen? I am unfamiliar with the New York Department of Education's rules, but I'm reasonably sure that the taxpayers of New York would frown on any teacher dating a 17-year-old. The taxpayers be damned, of course, when it comes to a tenured teacher in the union-controlled public school system.

Be assured that if Ms. Salamino should win her suit, others will learn from her example. Hey, if all that's preventing an affair between a teacher and a teenager is the teenager's status as a student, then all the teenager needs to do is drop out of school, and it's perfectly legal.

I am no prude, but this disturbing effort to blur the legal distinctions about underage sex -- involving a professional educator, no less -- is an entirely logical extension of the demand for unrestricted sexual freedom. Unless you're willing to say "anything goes" without regard for the consequences, then at some point the line must be drawn, and the line ought to be clear enough that everyone knows where it is.

Two unrelated incidents earlier this year called to my attention how confused our society has become in this regard:

Fifteen-year-old Disney "Hannah Montana" franchise starlet Miley Cyrus poses in her panties, shows her bra, and now poses topless in Vanity Fair -- and yet no legal action is threatened? Meanwhile, in Texas, the mere suspicion that teenagers are getting married causes a SWAT raid and state officials take 416 children away from their parents.

A senior aide to Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) was fired from his post last week after he was charged with distributing and receiving child pornography.
Jeffrey P. Rosato, an aide to Boxer and a senior policy adviser on the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, was arrested last Friday, the same day he was fired from Boxer's office, and charged with one count each of receipt and distribution of child pornography. He appeared in U.S. District Court in Alexandria on Wednesday and was released on his own recognizance, but he is forbidden to have access to children or computers.
According to an FBI affidavit, an unnamed person "distributed more than 600 files containing graphic images and movies of child pornography to an undercover detective that [the person] believed was a 13-year-old boy" over the course of more than 15 online chats during a three-week period in January. In that person's computer, the FBI found information suggesting the person had exchanged pornography with Rosato.
Investigators also found pornographic photos and movies of children on Rosato's laptop computer during a Nov. 4 search of his Alexandria home, according to the affidavit. "Many of the images and videos depict prepubescent boys engaged in sexual acts," it said.

The aide had previously worked for Sen. Bob Torricelli (D-N.J.). It's nice that the FBI does sting operations to protect America's kids from progressive Democrats. An aide to Sen. Maria Cantwell pleaded guilty on similar charges in February. Ace is inspired to a rant about why there is no media "trend" story about this.
