He voted for Paul in South Carolina's GOP primary in January and resigned his position on the Horry County Republican Party executive committee in February. He opposes abortion, same-sex marriage, gun control, and amnesty for illegal immigrants, repeatedly referring to the incumbent senator as "Grahamnesty." . . .Conley gives conservatives an opportunity to vote against Graham without feeling like they're betraying the cause. I can't find any polling on this race, but Graham has an enormous fundraising advantage. Conley's campaign Web site looks suspiciously like a Blogspot site, and his donation page is a PayPal account.
Even Senator Graham admits his challenger is to his right. According to the Charleston City Paper, he said, "From what I can tell, he doesn't represent moderation. I represent a brand of conservatism that you will feel comfortable with."
Still, if there's any Democrat who could beat Graham in South Carolina, it's a colorful hard-right guy like Conley. (He's got a better chance than the bland liberal challenger the Democrats have put up against Elizabeth Dole.) With Obama boosting black turnout, South Carolina might be a lot more interesting than some people think.
