Gov. Ted Strickland and fellow top Democrats released a letter asking embattled Ohio Attorney General Marc Dann to resign immediately. My brother-in-law, who lives in Columbus, sent me the full text of Dann's response, which concludes:
The letter signed by Strickland and other Democratic statewide elected officials tells Dann that his "actions have irreparably harmed your ability to effectively serve the people of our great state." . . .
In a statement to his staff, Dann said Strickland called him Sunday night, advising him of the letter.
"I told him that he and the other officeholders, as well as the members of the legislature, should continue to expect that we will continue to provide high-quality legal services to all of them," Dann wrote.
"That is exactly what I am doing today," he added. "I am in the office, have rolled up my sleeves and am working on behalf of the people of State of Ohio."
I think that there is a great chance that we can continue to do great work for the people of the State.Pathetic. Absolutely pathetic. Besides his admitted affair, Dann is deeply implicated in his aides' sexual-harassment problems. If Dann had any regard for "the people of the State," he'd have already resigned. He isn't going to survive this scandal, and by attempting to hang on, he's only delaying the inevitable.
I know that this is difficult, and I am truly sorry to have put all of you in this position. But our work is too important to do anything but our jobs today.
The Dann scandal is beyond politics at this point. Democrats are already damaged, and in terms of narrow partisan interests, Republicans would be in favor of Dann extending the damage as much as possible. But they're not. There are no Ohio Republicans saying, "Hang in there, Marc!"
Having an attorney general up to his chin in a horrid scandal like this is bad for all Ohioans, and Dann's immediate resignation would be in the best interests of all Ohioans, regardless of party.
