The Sambo Progressives

Why does TBogg get away with using a Sambo image? It's a question Donald Douglas is asking:
I've long documented the most vile bigotry and racism on the left end of the dial. During the 2008 primaries, we witnessed some of the most disgusting racism and sexism in decades. And across the blogosphere, the most reprehensible racial slurs and bigoted attacks on conservatives are considered fair game, penetrating social "commentary," and biting "satire."
You should go read the whole thing. The Left gets away with it, of course, because (a) they control the means of cultural production, (b) they claim to speak on the behalf of the designated victims, and (c) by defining their politics as synonymous with virtue, therefore they cannot be guilty of any vice.

  1. Now that I've gone and clicked, read the whole thing and readjusted the dials on my my brand spankin' new progressive filter/translator set, I think I must have a problem with the unit.

Or, TBoggs and his commenters are totally incoherent, in a racist way.

But, boy, can they project. Even I can see that - without space-age technology.

  2. I named my cat Frederick Douglass, does that make me a racist? He is a republican.... As far as the Sambo Progressives article goes, the article had too many links. It reminded me of foot noted academic papers where the writer has to justify his/her thinking based on what other people think... In the end, actions speak louder than words.

  3. Thanks McCain. As my dad used to say n his later years, "You've still got it, son"!

  4. Once again, your post is all confused and muddled.

    (a) is silly
    (c) is something equally true of the right, and basically true of any group

The Left gets away with it, of course, because (a) they control the means of cultural production, (b) they claim to speak on the behalf of the designated victims, and (c) by defining their politics as synonymous with virtue, therefore they cannot be guilty of any vice. Look, if you want to see racism and bigotry among so called progressives, just check out the comments in Duncan Black's blog on a daily basis. The assholes there, because they know how moral and smert and virtuous they are, know they can't make bigoted, sexist, racist statements, and so they do constantly, see, because they are being ironic, and satirical, something they figure no one from the right or no racist or bigot could ever possibly be.

    Leaving you with (b).

I would think the last election (and prior elections) would show that in general, to a good first approximation, the left does speak on behalf of "the designated victims."

Perhaps your philosophy and policy pronouncements would gain more traction if you were to consider how and why that is. The fault dear Brutus, is not in our stars, but in ourselves. (Well yourselves anyway.)

If the right didn't cozy up, on purpose, to so many bigots, and if you folks would intelligently address class issues, and issues of tax and income and health without dragging in all the usual bogeymen, then maybe you would find other people willing to listen to you.

  5. Hey, Anonymous Coward:

"If the right didn't cozy up, on purpose, to so many bigots,"

Name names, please, and add citing links -- and please make those recent links, not something from before the Civil War ended.

"...and if you folks would intelligently address class issues,"

You mean, "if you folks would just accept what we Wise Ones On the Left say about it" -- that's what you mean by "intelligently address."

"...and issues of tax and income and health"

You mean "parrot what we on the Left says about it, as our views are most wise, Peace Be Upon Us."

"without dragging in all the usual bogeymen,"

Translation: "All that stuff we don't believe in, like that freedom and responsibility for one's own choices and life crap."

"...then maybe you would find other people willing to listen to you."

Translation: "We only listen to people we agree with. As long as you express views different from ours, we're going to stick our fingers in our ears and go 'la la la!' and call you stupid fascists."

    And we're the silly ones.

  6. Oh yeah, it's " the Left are the real racists" canard.

Let's see, what party did the person in California who sent out an email of the white house lawn, littered with watermelons, belong to?
Oh that's right, that person was a Republican.
Just one example, dear friends, to remind you that no one is buying what you are selling.
Nice try, tho. If you can't bring yourselves to address the real issues then why not complain about how the Left supposedly gets away with racist jokes....
    The comedic Right never disappoints....

  7. Andrea,

"...and if you folks would intelligently address class issues,""You mean, "if you folks would just accept what we Wise Ones On the Left say about it" -- that's what you mean by "intelligently address."

No, that's not what I said. I said intelligently address. That's not accept what lefties like myself have to say, but it is a bit more than just putting words in our mouths and pretending the issue doesn't exist like you just did.

Here's Mickey Edwards in today's LA Times:

    http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/commentary/la-oe-edwards10-2009may10,0,2427294.story

The nation needs a better GOP
Republicans have to put a leash on attack-dog tactics and engage in a constructive manner to deal with serious problems facing the country.

At one point, Republicans put forth a coherent, idealistic vision of America, one that summoned it to greatness. There was a profound belief in the dignity of the individual, a reverence for the Constitution and the founders who proposed it, a belief in doing whatever it took (including spending tax dollars to build a military second to none) to preserve the peace. Republican platforms preached prudence and the virtues of small business.

Today, the Republican belief system has degenerated into an embarrassing hodgepodge that worships political victory more than ideas; supports massive deficits; plunges the nation into "just-in-case" wars without adequate troops, supplies or armor; dismisses constitutional strictures; and campaigns on a platform of turning national problem-solving over to "Joe the Plumber." It's hard to see how all that points the way to a reawakening of voters to trust in the GOP.

Merely attacking administration proposals and labeling Obama a "socialist" will only ensure that instead of rebounding, as the GOP did in 1968, the party will slip even further into irrelevance. And that will not be good for America.

Mickey Edwards is a former U.S. congressman, a lecturer at Princeton University and the author of "Reclaiming Conservatism."

  8. Oh and Andrea,

without dragging in all the usual bogeymen,"

Translation: "All that stuff we don't believe in, like that freedom and responsibility for one's own choices and life crap."
You will begin to be able to address the issues intelligently when you come to realize that 50% of your countrymen are not traitors that hate freedom or hate the country or hate personal responsibility and you stop shouting that they do.

Until then, enjoy the obscurity of irrelevance, you've earned it.

  9. Yep, like I said, all lefties do is plug their ears, sing "la la la la la!" and complain that the rest of us are thinking bad thoughts and are thus "irrelevant."

You know, I'm glad you folks are running the country. It's the funniest spectacle I've seen since Carter left office -- funnier, because this time the media has joined the circus.
