We need not hand a loaded gun to the opposition.

Case in point - Palin and the recent GOP fundraiser. there was an endless stream of anonymous, republican grumbling about how screwed up she is, she's not doing this or that right, etc. If they would have kept their mouths shut, reporters would have had to guess there was a problem. Also, if they are so smart, why aren't they offering their services? they don't want her to drag the party down, so don't let it happen! But the first thing is to "never let them see you sweat."

What we're doing now? I think it's healthy. the party NEEDS to find its way, and open debate is the way to go about it. Frum, Douthat, Friedersdorf, et al. have their ideas, and RSM and others have theirs. The big disagreement seems to be about the effect of "conservatives" in the defeats of the last two cycles. Frum, McCain, and their ilk have bought into the narrative of the Bush presidency. As Smitty says, they're "Fighting on a battlefield not of their own choosing." They've essentially allowed the enemy to define the debate within themselves - and that's strategically and tactically untenable.Jeff Weimerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07802456524746485019noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4223398383609158624.post-4305384326452906422009-06-28T02:51:20.521-04:002009-06-28T02:51:20.521-04:00Jeff,

I was only responding to Anonymous's comment that she is "a bit hefty."

I agree she is clueless on what ails the Republican Party and that is is moderates, not conservatives, that have damaged it. I don't know how much harm she's doing, though. I doubt she is doing as much harm as Frum, Friedersdorf, or Douthat, who are probably taken more seriously. Then again, maybe she's doing more harm because youngsters are more likely to listen to her. Who knows.

By the way, when is it OK to break the rule about speaking ill of other Republicans? Are conservatives breaking it when they speak ill of Megan McCain and Frum? Or do we just not speak ill of those who are actually in office?Deuce Gearyhttp://www.skepticrats.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4223398383609158624.post-63162082214798716272009-06-28T00:34:57.785-04:002009-06-28T00:34:57.785-04:00Deuce,

It's not that she's attractive or unattractive, she's frankly stupid when it comes to politics, no matter her pedigree.

I wish someone would take her aside and give her Ronald Reagan's Immortal words:

"Never speak ill of a fellow Republican"

Her father was a beneficiary of that little nugget of wisdom - after leaving his first wife to marry Cynthia, Nancy Reagan was furious, and would have nothing to do with him. But Ron still didn't publicly disavow him when it could have meant his career.

Many in the movement now could learn from those words. We are now in a bit of a civil war over the future of the party. It seems many want to marginalize the conservatives (of all stripes) since they believe conservatives are the reason we have lost power. They could be no more wrong. John McCain was no true conservative, and neither was GWB truly. Conservatives held their tongue (mostly) because of that principle. Conservatives are agitating because they are tired of being taken for granted and the "moderate" Republicans have got the party where, exactly?Jeff Weimerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07802456524746485019noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4223398383609158624.post-68706249705643210432009-06-27T23:52:43.074-04:002009-06-27T23:52:43.074-04:00Finally figured out Meg McCain.

Straight men just don't 'get her' like her gay friends. Hence, won't date (relationship, not hook up) often because straight men don't measure up to the gay men she hangs out with.Dave Chttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13779153708960447630noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4223398383609158624.post-71422127678833462062009-06-27T21:00:51.452-04:002009-06-27T21:00:51.452-04:00This is no reflection on your writing, but here...This is no reflection on your writing, but here's what I took away from the post, since I am not among those who find her unattractive:

"Blah, blah, blah
Crazy Cousin John's Twitter-happy idiot daughter
blah, blah,blah
in a pushup bra
blah, blah, blah."Deuce Gearyhttp://www.skepticrats.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4223398383609158624.post-67988258583046969462009-06-27T20:15:28.644-04:002009-06-27T20:15:28.644-04:00Mr. Dittmar,

During the primaries there were just far too many Republicans still clinging to the idea that committing to loosing another thousand lives and spending another 50 billion dollars to do whatever the heck it was we were trying to do in Iraq was just the ticket to win in November. Remember how Guiliani was actually feted by this crowd as a plausible candidate before he imploded? After he went down the MidEast monomania shifted to McCain and secured his nomination and the rest was embarrassment for the GOP.

(Except for Sarah though. Please let’s continue to give the knucklehead that. A multitude of sins can be forgiven because of one act of political genius.)R.
